Deconstructing grief – controlling the uncontrollable.

Death is an incomprehensible and terrifying phenomenon to us and according to Zygmunt Bauman it is both the destroyer and creator of meaning in our lives (Bauman 1992). Beginning from this notion of death as the enabler of culture, I will discuss how our current ways of handling grief can be seen as the most recent attempt at controlling death. I will discuss what Bauman means when he says that we handle death through a ‘deconstruction of mortality’ and how this way of ‘solving’ death only makes it more problematic for us. I will then argue that we might understand the recent inclusion of the diagnostic criteria for Prolonged Grief Disorder as a new attempt at controlling our fear of death.

Death and grief are prime examples of what Hartmut Rosa would call the uncontrollable (Rosa 2020) and our attempts at controlling – or deconstructing – them are destroying our possibilities for living meaningful lives. I will discuss the recent developments in regard to grief from this perspective and argue that our society leaves less space for grief and therefore we attempt to control it through diagnostic criteria, models of grief and so forth, but also that the individual experience of grief may have become increasingly difficult.

Peter Clement Lund holds an Msc in both psychology and sociology, he is currently a Ph.D. fellow at the research center The Culture of Grief at Aalborg University.
